After Bubble 1, I tried to explore the idea of deep sea exploration further, by adding abstract flora and plants into the environments. I switched up the color scheme so that I could visually tell the different sets within the series apart when looking at the thumbnails. For this second set, I used orange and white. It looks a bit like Nemo in the end. The floral elements add a nice touch of deep sea environments, with the translucent latex shells around the bodies providing visual similarities to things like soft shell crabs as they shred their skins during the seasons. Conceptually, these are abstract sculptural forms mixed with male figures, but realized as a cross between human forms and deep sea creatures.
If you need a more story-driven line, you can see these men as going deep into the ocean to explore the sea creaturs, but something happened to them and they were progressively transformed into sea creatures. I tried to play with this theme in my “But does it float” series but I believe that Midjourney’s rendering made them overly serious so ultimately they just didn’t work as well.
Some of the hands are wonky, yes, but the goal of these images is not necessarily for them to replicate the human form, but rather to see what I could d with this new technique.
Like my other early experiments with image prompts inside Midjourney, it could be hard to control the results. Up to this point, I had generated around 20 images, so they were made fairly in the process. As I wrote this right now, I have generated about 1000 images and I have a fairly good idea of what types of image source would work well.
What I find most interesting is how the images that worked the best inside Midjourney also appeared to work the best using this workflow in Stable Diffusion. Although Midjourney continues to deny that they use Stable Diffusion tech in anyway, this similarity makes me question exactly how dissimilar they really are.
