Delivery
I have always lived in cities, because I enjoy the city life. But wherever I live, I always try to find a secluded neighborhood that’s away from people — all the families, kids, and people in general. I love the the excitement when I want to go out, but I prefer having quiet times when I’m home. When I first moved to New York, I lived in SoHo, right in the middle of the city. It was fun at first but the noise really got to me. I eventually moved out and went to live in DUMBO.
If you’re unfamiliar with it, it‘s a strip of industrial warehouses near the Manhattan Bridge. (Wikipedia) DUMBO was an eclectic neighborhood in the early 2000, filled with an interesting mix of people — the artists renting the lofts for the large studio spaces, the wealthy businessmen who decided to invest in the early luxury properties that began to rise up, and then there were the construction workers who were working on these luxury development, who would get off work and hang out at the local pubs. With the limited amount of restaurants available then, we would all hang out at the same places. Everyone was so down-to-earth. I really enjoyed my time there, before Starbucks eventually moved in and the neighborhood completely changed.
Although DUMBO is located right in the center of the city, with a 5-minute cab ride to downtown Manhattan, it didn’t really have many places to shop and eat until much later. So I got everything delivered to my place — food, groceries, books, furniture. My life revolved around delivery men coming in and out. The UPS and FedEx guys knew me by name simply because they dropped by daily, sometimes twice a day. I made this series mostly because I thought about them — the always nice smile on their faces, with very strong arms and legs carrying my packages. It’s always cheery to see them.
