Mondrian Variations 1 - MJ
Mondrian Variations
Piet Mondrian is a Dutch painter who is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Throughout his career, he changed his artistic direction from figurative painting to an increasingly abstract style, until he reached a point where his artistic vocabulary was reduced to simple geometric elements.
Creating works based on artistic styles is something that Midjourney does very well, and I used Midjourney v5.2 to create works that remind of Mondrian. There are mainly two ways to prompt this:
- (description) in the style of Mondrian
- (description) by Mondrian
Both ways of prompting will create works that look abstract, but with a key difference — when you prompt with “by Mondrian,” the images generated tend to be paintings as if they were painted by Mondrian. In contrast, prompting with “in the style of Mondrian” will create photography with things that bear the signature of the style of Mondrian. This distinction is subtle but important, and can be seen in the examples below.
Note that using By Mondrian
also could pick up all of his early works, such as the famous “Broadway Boogie Woogie” and might not be the style you’re looking for. I had prepared some of those but I had run out of space on Instagram, so I will post those later. I wanted to have the signature color palette that Mondrian uses, so for some of these, I did also add “in the style of Mondrian, red, blue, yellow, white, black, saturated colors” so that it will give me those strong primary colors seen typically in Mondrian’s works towards the end of his career.
