The jocks are hanging out at the docks with their coach. Concepts of muscular rugby players with themes of the heavy men’s crew — two subject matters that I work with.

I tried out Flux today, first with Flux Schnell, their open source model, then with Flux Pro, the closed source model via Replicate. It is impressive. Many people have said that they are a Midjourney killer, and it really is. Impressive imaginative compositions from the same prompt — without any prompt expansion.
Flux is developed by Black Forest Labs, the original team behind Stability AI, before they all left and created a startup. There was a bit of “tension” in the Stability business recently, and this is potentially the best things that come up with it.
BFL released three models in three flavors:
- Flux Pro. The ultimate model that’s not open, but only available via the API. API access has some limitations such as content policy, but by accessing it with the Replicate API, I didn’t get into any issue. You can’t download the models directly.
- Flux Dev. Open weight, downloadable, but for non-commercial use only.
- Flux Schnell. Open source licensing.
All the models are extremely fast. I haven’t tried to use them locally yet because I’m on a Mac. Planning to get a new PC soon but right now torn between waiting for the new GPU vs getting the 4090 immediately. Leaning to waiting.
