Text prompts with Midjourney v5.

Set 1

This first set is mainly to illustrate something that I promised someone I would show. All 3 images set the medium as “painting” by [a list of artists] that I wrote for this series.

As many who work with Midjourney know, the expected MJ prompt format is:

[describe the scene, [medium: painting in this case], by [an artist or list of artists with optional weights to mix styles], in the style of [insert all the qualifiers here. Usually about the style specifically, but secondary keyword association about the scene can also happen here].

The reason that you would want to put secondary stylistic things at the end is because Midjourney tends to treat words in the beginning as being more important than the rest. This is in contrast to Stable Diffusion, where all words are treated equally regardless of order unless you add weights. So the reason for putting things that are not generally important to the scene at the end is mostly to not waste the important “keyword fields” at the very beginning.

Ok, going back to the paintings:

  1. Prompt, including “painting”
  2. Prompt, including “painting” but also with the --niji 5 flag
  3. Prompt, without the --niji 5 flag, but with the keyword niji and also weights, so something like: “[long string of text prompt]:: niji::0.5” such that it will add a touch of niji without being niji completely. I have some other creations that uses niji::0.2 with great effect.

Using the --niji 5 param usually will turn your creations into anime, but by using the “painting” keyword as the medium, you can then get something in between, which as you can see will create very strong lines and definitions seen in anime, and also very contour shading of the 3D forms, while keeping it painterly and influenced by the list of artists that I have created for the series.

When I create paintings in Midjourney, description of the scene usually takes about 30% of the prompt, then 30% of it would be artist names (yeah mix and match - say you want Picasso with just a touch of Mondrian for the his colors, you can do it, with weights), then 40% style qualifiers and other things.
